What has impressed you most
- What the work of art was (30 seconds)
- A few years ago, my girlfriend and I went to a concert held by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra presenting City Lights performed by Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin is a comedy and meme master, I was so thrilled to watch accompanied by live orchestral music.
- Can you describe in detail? (30 seconds)
- It was my first time listening to live orchestral music with the movie. And the movie was hilarious. Actually, the plot of the film is about modernity influenced by the industrial revolution. People were alienated to be one of the small elements in a functioning system. People's leisure time started to squeeze and work all day for the sake of the companies' revenues. At that period of time, the capital derived from productivity was hugely accumulated by the entrepreneurs and investors, and deepen the gap between social classes accordingly. Charlie had a sense of humor to act out the suffering of the working-class to an entertainment dimension.
- What made this work of art beautiful (30 seconds)
- What impressed me was the strong character of Chaplin. In the past, due to the limitation in cinematographic technology, actors needed to express themselves by exaggerating facial expressions and body language, but these had to be clearly projected to the camera. Besides, the screen was blank and white. That made the audience mainly focus on the acting but not the color harmony of the scene. The experience was extraordinary to how we watch movies nowadays.
- The impact this work of art had on you (30 seconds)
- It made a very romantic and memorable night for both of us. Besides, I get to know more about how people live and act in the past. What's more, I was inspired by the aesthetics of Mime. Afterward, I took a mime workshop taught by Hong Kong famous Mime actor Eric Chan on how to tell a story without a voice. It strengthens my skill in communication with others profoundly and also deepens my understanding of what effective communication really means. In some situations, action speaks louder than words.
Talk about a polluted place that you have visited.
- Introduce the place (30 seconds)
- For 15 years my family and I travelled to my mother's village quite often. It is called Chung Shan, one of the provinces in Mainland China. As I recalled, it was a very horrible experience as this place was severely affected by the pollution. When I grew up and I could travel by myself, I swore to myself that I would not visit there anymore.
- What can you observe? (30 seconds)
- My mum and dad did not realize the severity of pollution there and how things have become worse than ever after the economic reform in China, or they might think it was just quite normal in mainland china so pollution was not their concern in terms of places for travelling. Almost everywhere on the streets were full of dust and sand visibly, what I meant is that you would feel irritated at your eyes and nose while you just walk from one destination to another for a few minutes. It was attributed to that there were too many vehicles, especially motorcycles. Apart from that, there were odorous smells of untreated wastes discharged from the pipes near the river that we could see some fishes float on the surface while people were still catching them for a meal, that was awful. More shockingly, the air pollution was also noticeable. I saw many industries and factories that were exhausting black fumes contaminated and that has made the air polluted more than any other parts I know about.
- Why this happens? (30 seconds)
- That is also today China, environmental conditions just become more and more severe, but it is still negligible in the eyes of the functional state compared with the economic progress these 2 decades. Because of the uncontrolled urbanisation and modernization, the establishment of new factories & industries without sustainable development, lack of accountability on the government, transparency in administration and corruption in government offices are so far the main reasons for increasing pollution in China. I wish we will be conscious enough not to destroy our own treasurable inhabitants anymore. Besides, people will be less healthier and some even suffer from life-threatening diseases, such as lung cancer, skin cancer, and so on.
- What do you advise the government? (30 seconds)
- Therefore, I would advise the government to cut down on vehicles on the street by encouraging people to use public transportation, to relieve the noise pollution and air pollution. Heavy fines should be paid by those who litter. Most of all, we should raise awareness and educate people to protect the environment in school and in mass media.
