Episode 4. Larynx and Style

Do we need to always keep the larynx down?

We need to keep an open mind to deal with this.

The fact is that we don't raise the larynx when singing high notes or jam it down to make a darker sound. However, the position of larynx helps us to sing different styles of music.

Demonstration by Justin to hear which laryngeal position is appropriate.

If I loved you by Rogers and Hammerstein

  1. Lowest Larynx
  2. Low Larynx
  3. Medium Larynx
  4. High Larynx
  5. Highest larynx

We found that the first three are appropriate to the song, while the last two sound insane that we should not use them.

When September Ends by Green Day

This time, the first three are not appropriate and crazy, the 4th and the 5th one get into the zone of rock, it depends how much grit and edge we want.

It is encouraged that singers should keep an open mind to explore from classical to jazz-pop-rock, which can give you colour and idea we never had before.

There is no hierarchy, but the difference in taste.
